The screams have officially returned to Cincinnati!
September means haunted house season is waking up across the Tri-State, and this weekend marks a major turning point for Halloween fans. Some of Cincinnati’s biggest haunted attractions have already opened their doors, several more join the lineup this weekend, and the remaining haunts aren’t far behind.
From a legendary haunted schoolhouse and a nightmare aboard the Ohio River to haunted hayrides, scream parks and an underground cave, Greater Cincinnati has an incredible variety of ways to get scared in 2026.

The Dent Schoolhouse – Cincinnati, Ohio
Halloween is already alive at The Dent Schoolhouse, which opened its 2026 season on September 11.
And this isn’t just another season at Dent. 2026 marks 30 Seasons of Screams for the Cincinnati Halloween tradition.
The historic schoolhouse returns with its massive multi-level haunted attraction, including classrooms, Charlie’s Basement, the Catacombs, Zobo’s Backlot CarnEvil, Dr. Dent’s Laboratory and a renovated finale filled with werewolves, spiders and more.
The scares don’t stop when you exit the schoolhouse. Admission also includes the Monster Midway, featuring photo opportunities, games, seasonal treats, mini escape experiences, the Cincinnati Haunted House Museum and plenty of reasons to hang around after surviving the haunt.
Dent operates on select nights throughout September before expanding its schedule in October. Special events later in the season include Ghost Tours, Lights On, Lights Out, Slasher Night and A Christmas Nightmare.

USS Nightmare – Newport, Kentucky
The crew is waking up aboard the Ohio River.
USS Nightmare opens Friday, September 18, giving Cincinnati haunt fans one of the most unusual haunted attraction settings anywhere in the region.
Instead of entering a traditional building, guests climb aboard an actual dredge boat docked in Newport, Kentucky. Tight corridors, multiple decks and the natural atmosphere of an old vessel help make the experience completely different from a traditional haunted house.
USS Nightmare also offers special experiences later in the season, including its Lights On Matinee and Captain’s Extreme Tour.
And for 2026, serious Cincinnati haunt fans can even experience both USS Nightmare and The Dent Schoolhouse through the limited Scream Seekers Combo.

Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride – Petersburg, Kentucky
Sometimes the scariest place to be isn’t inside a haunted house at all.
Sandyland Acres Haunted Hayride returns in Petersburg, Kentucky, offering an old-school outdoor Halloween experience through the darkness.
For more than two decades, guests have climbed aboard for a roughly 25-minute haunted hayride filled with characters and scenes inspired by horror past and present.
The rural setting is a big part of the experience. Once the sun disappears and the wagon heads into the darkness, you’re a long way from the bright lights of downtown Cincinnati.
Sandyland Acres is scheduled to operate Friday and Saturday nights from September 18 through Halloween.

Great For: Haunted hayride fans and anyone looking for an outdoor Halloween experience.
Land of Illusion Haunted Scream Park – Middletown, Ohio
Why choose one haunted attraction when you can make an entire night out of it?
Land of Illusion Haunted Scream Park opened September 11 in Middletown and returns in 2026 with a huge lineup of Halloween entertainment.
Land of Illusion advertises six haunted attractions, a one-mile haunted trail and more than 200 monsters, along with live entertainment, food, drinks, shopping and themed weekends.
It’s less of a quick haunted-house stop and more of a Halloween destination where groups can spend several hours moving between attractions.

Location: Middletown, Ohio
Great For: Groups who want the quantity and variety of multiple haunted attractions in one location.
Brimstone Haunt – Wilmington, Ohio
The screams also return to Wilmington with Brimstone Haunt, celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2026.
Brimstone combines multiple haunted experiences with a midway where guests can grab food and drinks, play games, shop and recover before heading into the next attraction.
The outdoor setting makes Brimstone another good option for haunt fans looking to get outside the traditional four walls of a haunted house.
Gates open at 7:30 p.m. on operating nights, with the haunted attractions beginning after sunset.
Location: Wilmington, Ohio
Great For: Multiple attractions, outdoor scares and a full scream-park atmosphere.
Lewisburg Haunted Cave – Lewisburg, Ohio
If walking through a dark haunted house isn’t intimidating enough, how about going underground?
The Lewisburg Haunted Cave provides one of Ohio’s most unusual Halloween experiences. Guests descend underground into a real limestone cave transformed into a sprawling haunted attraction.
The natural environment does much of the work: rock walls, darkness and underground passageways create an atmosphere that simply can’t be recreated inside a normal haunted house.
Lewisburg operates on Friday and Saturday evenings during its 2026 season, with hours varying by operating night.

Great For: Road trips, adventurous haunt fans and anyone looking for an experience unlike a traditional haunted house.
Cincinnati Fear Fest – Williamsburg, Ohio
Cincinnati Fear Fest brings another full-scale Halloween destination to the east side of Greater Cincinnati.
Beyond its haunted experiences, Fear Fest turns the night into an event with live entertainment and special programming. Its 2026 calendar includes bands, DJs and other performances throughout the haunt season, giving guests something to experience before and after the scares.
For groups that want their haunted-house trip to feel more like a Halloween night out, Fear Fest offers plenty to keep the evening going.

Great For: Haunted attractions mixed with live entertainment and a festival atmosphere.
Coming Soon: Mt. Healthy Haunted Hall – Mt. Healthy, Ohio
One of Cincinnati’s great old-school haunted traditions is almost ready to join the party.
Mt. Healthy Haunted Hall is scheduled to begin its 2026 season later in September. The nonprofit community haunt features more than 20 scenes, including returning favorites such as the Hellavator and plenty of new surprises.
One of its biggest attractions is the price. With general admission listed at $15 for 2026, Mt. Healthy remains one of the most budget-friendly ways to enjoy a Cincinnati haunted house.
The attraction is sponsored by the Madonna Council Knights of Columbus with help from local youth organizations, with proceeds benefiting participating groups and other charities.
